HISTORY OF THE PROGRAMME/SUB-DISCIPLINE/DISCIPLINE

The Animal Science Programme of Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki started at the inception of the defunct Anambra State University of Science and Technology in the year 1987/88 in the Faculty of Agriculture in the then Abakaliki Campus. The original name of the programme was Animal Production and Aquaculture. Following the university wide course rationalization in 1989/90 session, the Department of Animal Production and Aquaculture was renamed Animal Science and Fisheries. The Department graduated the first batch of her students in the 1991/1992 academic year. Animal Science Programme was de-merged from Animal Production and Fisheries Management in 2005 by Ebonyi State University Senate based on the recommendation of the NUC accreditation team. The programme was renamed Animal Science in 18th September, 2007. The academic programme of the department is already in full gear. The Agric programme develops in each student an appreciation for contemporary issues in Agriculture and an understanding of the principles food and animal production through intensive farm practice and laboratory-exercise taught by academic staff dedicated to enriching the learning experience. It inculcates in students the ability to apply modern agricultural principles in solving contemporary problems.

Philosophy of the Programme

The Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Science programme in Ebonyi State University is aimed at producing high level manpower, competent in theory and practice, for sustainable development of Animal Science related problems and managing the poultry and livestock that abound in the state and several other parts of the country. Lecturers and researchers of proven ability and integrity are on ground to facilitate the proper upbringing of students. Students are to be equipped with effective management skills in all aspects of Animal Science to enable them meet the manpower needs of the poultry and livestock establishments in the country in line with the Millennium Development Goals.

Objectives

The overall objective of the programme is to train students to acquire skill and competence required for service as Animal scientists. Graduates of the programme will service as a major source of manpower for the livestock industry, government ministries and international organizations which emphasize animal production and management, government and private farms, universities and other educational and research establishments with interest in animal training. Graduates of the programme are also expected to perform in all business concerns. Job opportunities There is a wide range of interest areas in Animal Science, which enables people with different backgrounds, aptitudes and temperaments, to select satisfactory areas based careers eg, genetics , physiology, production and nutrition for the animal production. In Nigeria, opportunities for service at appropriate levels exist in the commodity research institutes such as the Livestock farms, Biotechnologies, Agro-allied industries and Veterinary Research Institute in Vom near Jos.

Admission Requirements

UTME/Pre-Science Requirements: SSC or GCE or NECO with passes at credit level in at least 5 subjects obtained at not more than two sittings. The 5 credits should include English Language, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Biology or Agricultural Science. UTME subjects: English Language, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics and Biology or Agricultural Science. Direct Entry Requirements: HSC or GCE A/L in Chemistry, Biology, Agricultural Science, Integrated Science and at least 5 credits at SSC/GCE O/L. candidates with ND/HND, NCE in Agricultural disciplines or other relevant qualifications approved by Senate.
