HISTORY OF THE PROGRAMME/SUB-DISCIPLINE/DISCIPLINE

The University started as a University College affiliated to Enugu State University (ESUT). As such the programme seeking accreditation has its root in the B.Sc. Political Science Department of ESUT. However, with the attainment of a full University status in 1999, the curriculum of the programme was expanded and fine-tuned. This was done in line with the National Policy on Education and National Universities Commission minimum academic standards

Philosophy of the Programme

The basic philosophy of the Political Science programme in keeping with the fundamental philosophy of the University at large is designed to encourage and promote the training of the students in all aspects of Political Science. The students are expected at the end of their programme of study to be able to apply political knowledge and techniques in solving several political problem in the society in to ensure sustainability. The Department aims to produce graduates that are not only equipped with knowledge in all aspects of modern politics, but that are also aware of current national and international problems and proffer solutions to these problems through critical thinking and application of political ideology.
This clearly brings to the fore the real essence of political science which primarily has to do with the study of power and power relations among men within the state and the global arena. In other words, political science is the systematic and analytical study of the processes leading to the acquisition, consolidation and exercise of power by individuals, groups and organizations within the political system
The study of political science inculcates in the citizenry the culture of been knowledgeable about government, its processes, democratic ideals, values, attitudes and norms which inavertedly places him in a vantage position to contribute to the development and sustenance of a stable democratic process.
It is also within the purview of political science to bring to the citizenry a better understanding of the relations among states and international organizations focusing principally on their interdependence, cooperation, peaceful co-existence and mutual assistance.

Objectives

The broad objective of the political science programme is principally designed to equip students in the discipline with analytical skills and the in-depth knowledge that will be of benefit to the student and the society. The specific objectives amongst others include:
a. To produce highly skilled manpower to feed the administrative machinery in Ebonyi State in particular and Nigeria in general.
b. To produce graduates with strong academic background for teaching and research with a view to providing panacea for societal problems.
c. To produce graduates with the necessary political skills to re-engineer the country’s political landscape for a sustainable and enduring democratic culture.
d. To inculcate within the scope of the students’ training the necessary values, skills and techniques for effective and moral leadership.
e. To provide the necessary and unquantifiable training in citizenship that will broaden the students’ sense and scope of participation in national as well as international affairs.

Job Opportunities

There is a range of interest areas and job opportunities in political science, which enables a person with different backgrounds, aptitudes and temperament, to select satisfactorily graduates of political science based careers. E.g. public and civil services, justice, SSS, military, foreign missions, international organizations, corporate institutions, universities, polytechnics, etc.

Admission Requirements

Candidates seeking admission in the department of political science must first satisfy the general entry requirements of Ebonyi State University and the Faculty of Social Sciences. In this light, the entry requirements for both admission into first degree in political science for both the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and Direct Entry candidates are as follows:
Applicants must write the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) with the use of English being compulsory and three other arts subjects relevant to the discipline of political science.
Candidates must in addition to obtaining the general Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), university and departmental cut-off mark passes the following:
i. West African Examination Council/National Examination Council Senior School Certificate (SSCE) or General Certificate of Education Ordinary level (GCE O/L) with credit passes in five subject obtained at not more than two sittings.
ii. Credit passes in English Language and Mathematics is compulsory for entry into the department in addition to its being the basic entry requirement into all programmes in Ebonyi State University.
Direct Entry Applicants may be considered for admission if they possess the following qualifications:
i. A minimum of five (5) subjects passed at not more than two sittings with at least two at the Advanced level of the GCE and the others at credit level of the SC/GCE O’level. Note must be taken that no subject shall be counted at both Ordinary and Advanced levels.
ii. A Minimum of credit or merit passes in two major subjects in the NCE with SSC, GCE O’level credit or equivalents in THREE other subjects (Mainly for education courses).
iii. Higher National Diploma (HND) or National Diploma (ND) (passed at credit level) in political science or allied courses obtained from Ebonyi State University or other institutions recognized by the University senate with SSC/GCE O’level credit or its equivalent in three subjects.
