HISTORY OF THE PROGRAMME/SUB-DISCIPLINE/DISCIPLINE

Ebonyi State University (EBSU) is an off shoot of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT). Following the creation of Ebonyi state and the establishment of this university,
there was this strong desire by the state to have a viral mathematics and computer science department to serve the interest of the state and train manpower in that line.
The department took off in 1998/1999 academic session with three (3) students and staff strength of twelve, six academics and six non academics.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

THE AIMS AND THE OBJECTIVES OF BACHELOR HONOURS DEGREE PROGRAMME IN MATHEMATICS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

a. To instil in students a sense of enthusiasm for mathematics, an appreciation of its application in different areas and to involve them in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying.
b. To provide students a broad and balanced foundation in mathematical knowledge and practical skills in statistics and computer science.
c. To develop in students the ability to apply their mathematics knowledge and skills to the solution of theoretical and practical problems in mathematics.
d. To develop in students, through an education in mathematics, a range of transferable skills of values in mathematics related and non-mathematics related employment.
e. To provide students with knowledge and skills- base from which they can proceed to further studies in specialized areas of mathematics or multi-disciplinary areas involving mathematics.
f. To generate in students an appreciation of the importance of mathematics in an industrial planning, economic planning, environmental and social planning.

Admission Requirements

For UME Candidates, the entry requirement shall be at least credit level passes in five subjects including English, mathematics, or further mathematics, physics to form the core subjects with credit in any other two relevant science subjects at the senior secondary school certificate or its equivalent. For DIRECT ENTRY Candidates with two A level passes (graded A-E) at the Advanced Level in one or more relevant subjects (Mathematics, Physics and Further-Mathematics) may undertake the three – year degree programme into 200-level. Candidate with good NCE result in Mathematics, HND in any physical sciences and
Bachelor in Engineering or Technology shall be considered for direct entry admission.
